ZAGAR GEN II ROBOTIC END EFFECTOR DEMO AT IMTS 2012

Chicago, IL, September 10, 2012 – Zagar Inc. will present its End Of Arm Tooling (E.O.A.T.) tooling for robotic drilling and tapping including a demonstration of the MQ-50 drilling end effector in the Fanuc exhibit S-8919. The MQ-50 is a ballscrew driven unit using Fanuc AC motors and it can be integrated with individual robot controls to perform drilling, taping, countersinking, reaming, burr removal and other basic machining functions. The unit can be configured for applications such as drilling holes for panel assemblies to the manufacture of truck trailers, freight cars, electrical enclosures and many other applications that require basic hole drilling without operator attendance or fatigue.

In development for the past 5 years, most of the EOA activities have focused on the aerospace industry, with applications for aircraft assembly. Zagar end effectors provide numerous operations including drilling, countersinking and gauging holes for assembly fasteners used in various aerospace programs including the Airbus A-350 and A-380, as well as initial assembly for the F-35 Strike Fighter. While each application in aerospace has its unique requirements, drilling and countersinking holes in titanium, aluminum or composite materials are functions for which Zagar has applied its drilling expertise. Other applications may require coolant through the spindle, automatic tool changing, closed loop coolant flushing and laser or photo-optic positioning systems, all as robotic applications continue to grow within the aerospace industry. Zagar sees that potential, as well as increased use of end effectors for less complex machining applications.

Zagar end effectors are available in a variety of configurations and include features such as surface contact sensing and a pneumatic-actuated pressure foot with linear position feedback through a digital transducer (LDVT). Quillfeed is actuated by a zero backlash, precision-ground ballscrew that is on the centerline of the spindle. Options also include CNC 2-axis control systems, and application- specific modifications are available.
